One of our club members announced that he needed his third Electronic Body Control Module for his C5. His first one failed. His second one failed. Without it working, he probably can’t even start and maybe can’t even move his car!!
Apparently, you can no longer buy one from GM.
And I looked at other aftermarket suppliers and Body Control Modules are not easy to get. Cardone® brand lists two part numbers that they sell through auto parts stores, but I don’t think either part number is available now.
So, I went to the online forums to see what might be done.
First, there are some troubleshooting steps that can be taken, such as making sure the module’s ground circuit is clean and has low electrical resistance.
Second, there are some electronics repair businesses that advertise repair and occasionally in stock replacements.
G7Computers.com got some favorable comments. And some negative ones.
Other possibilities are:
• Upfix.com
• Blue Streak Electronics (BSEcorp.com)
• Automotive Scientific (AutoECU.com)
• ABS Fixer (ABSfixer.net)
But, be ready for some stress. These automotive computer components are complex. Sometimes the problem is fixed, sometimes it isn’t, and sometimes the problem is elsewhere.
Do any of you have better sources for this sort of repair?
And just wondering: For all this complexity, why is it apparently so easy for criminals to steal your car? Take a look at this tale of woe: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c7-zr1-discussion/4953157-sadly-yet-another-stolen-zr1-sgm-auto-non-ztk-coupe.html
